Beat the summer heat

By CREB®

With the summer temperature rising, CREB®’s Critical Illness Benefit Society (CIBS) wants to make sure you have the information you need to beat the heat.

The reality is that a heat wave like we’ve seen lately can increase the risk of sunburn and dehydration, along with heat-related illness, such as heat exhaustion and sunstroke.

Of course, this is all avoidable with the right precautions. Here are a few tips from the experts at Alberta Health Services

Block harmful rays

Stay safe from the sun’s harmful rays by using waterproof sunscreen of 30 SPF or greater that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Apply the sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside and reapply it frequently for the best sun protection.

Cool off

When temperatures are high, make sure to take frequent breaks from the heat. Spend some time indoors to cool off at home, or in a cooled public building— like a mall, exhibit or indoor pool.

Dress for the sunshine

What you wear makes a big difference in keeping your body cool when you’re spending time outdoors. If you know you will be out in the heat, wear light coloured clothing to reflect the sun. Wear sunglasses that have a UVA/UVB CSA-certified seal and a brimmed hat go a long way to help protect you from the sun’s rays.

Stay hydrated

A water bottle is a much needed accessory with any summer outfit— make sure to drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.

If you have a full day planned in the summer sun, drink lots of water the night before to boost your hydration.

When you plan to be out and about on a hot summer day, consider preparing a backpack with sunscreen, bottled water and healthy snacks, such as fruits and vegetables.

Remember to pay attention to your body and watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion and sunstroke to stay safe in the summer weather.
