As a general business practice, members are always expected to act with consideration and courtesy when showing a home to clients. It’s a topic that we assume you’re tuned into as a REALTOR®, but important to brush up on.
Here are some quick tips to ace property showings:
Lead the showing: Inform your clients ahead of time on proper showing etiquette. Prospective buyers are not house guests, so should avoid using bathrooms, touching personal items or helping themselves to food items.
Be on time: This tip may be basic, but very important. Being on time shows professionalism and preparation. You may catch a home owner off guard by showing up too early or too late. If you’re unable to make the appointment on time, inform the listing REALTOR® immediately.
Keep children at hand: If it’s necessary that a child accompanies you, ensure they are by your side at all times. When a homeowner grants permission for you to enter their home for a showing, they trust that everyone will treat their home with respect.
Tidy up: Make sure to leave someone’s home exactly as it was when you arrived. This will reflect positively on you as a REALTOR® and the real estate industry.
Secure the property: When you leave the showing, take time to confirm that no lights or appliances are on and that you’ve secured all windows and doors. Leave a business card to show the property owner that you have come and gone, and return the key to the lockbox.
Communicate any problems: After a showing, do not hesitate to pass any concerns back to the listing REALTOR®. If the home was open when you arrived or something was disturbed during the showing, let the listing representative know immediately after. Many issues can be resolved if acted on right away.
