We hope your Mother’s Day is full of spring blossoms, warm sunshine and….pink hard hats?
In May, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta hosts Women Build—a unique opportunity for women to come together, show strength and build affordable housing.
Last week, 12 fierce female CREB® REALTORS® flexed their muscles at the first Women Build of 2018 and in one day contributed nearly 100 volunteer hours!
To top it off, Murray Scotton, from the Foundations Board of Governors stepped up as crew leader for the day. The feisty crew went to work on two Bowness five-plexes, which will soon be home to 10 families.
Women who participate can expect a tough but exhilarating day, building alongside like-minded women who care about the social well-being of their city. No experience is necessary as all participants receive work gear, tools, safety training and instructions ensuring they have a safe and meaningful experience.
“This was all about giving back and I felt so invigorated by the end of the day. I didn’t want to stop," said Kathy Thirsk, associate with REMAX First. “There are houses and there are homes. I know that the homes that these families are going to receive are built layer by layer with love!”
Whether you’re learning new skills or simply adding a few to your tool belt, Women Build is a rewarding experience that improves the lives of working families with children.
So far, this year’s Women Build has raised more than $151,000, exceeding the goal of $134,000, with several more build days taking place this weekend.
“Every day, families find themselves in a struggle to keep a safe roof over their heads. We know that one of the most important ways for families to gain stability and independence is for them to own their own homes, and that’s what Women Build is all about,” said Jane Dafoe, Fund Development Director for Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta.
Every Habitat home is the result of tremendous support, through donations of funds, contributions of building materials and skilled labour and volunteer work.
CREB® Charitable Foundation recently announced a three-year, $1 million partnership with Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta.
