Several events are taking place in the city to commemorate this important date:
Field of Crosses
Nov. 1 – 11, 2023, 200 Memorial Drive N.W.
On display from Nov. 1-11, the Field of Crosses is open to the public 24/7 for visitors to pay their respects to the soldiers and walk amongst the crosses. Ceremonies take place during the sunrise and sunset until Nov. 10.
On the 11, the ceremony is held at the field at 10:10 a.m. Please note that parking is very restricted, so parking on the South side of the river in the Eau Claire area is recommended. Memorial Drive will be closed from 9 a.m. until after the ceremony.
The Military Museums
Nov. 11, 2023, 4520 Crowchild Trail S.W.
Calgary’s Military Museums will host in-person and online ceremonies to commemorate Remembrance Day.
Admission to the museum won’t require advance booking and will be by donation. This year, no food bank donations will be accepted.
The arrival of guests will start at 10:15 a.m., with the ceremony proceeding at 10:30 a.m.
For those unable to attend, the Military Museums will also host a virtual event, which will be live-streamed on their Facebook page beginning at 10:20 a.m. MT.
Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium
Nov. 11, 2023, 1415 14 Ave N.W.
The Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium will hold a Remembrance Day ceremony, with the doors of the building opening at 9 a.m. Tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Those who are unable to attend ceremonies can remember and honour the men and women who served Canada through different activities such as:
- Wearing a poppy
- Pausing for two minutes of silence at 11:00 a.m. on November 11.
- Listening to interviews with Veterans in the First World War Audio Archives.
- Watching Learning Videos and "Heroes Remember" Mini-Documentaries about the First World War, Second World War and the Korean War.
- Reading the poem In Flanders Fields and about Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae who wrote it.
- Writing to Veterans and Canadian Armed Forces members and participating in the "Peace cards e-cards" or "Valentines for Vets" projects.
