The board of directors has approved a motion to amend 1.2.5 Director Development and 1.2.6 Director Honorarium and Expense policies to enhance the education and professional development of our Board as well as to provide ongoing reporting transparency to our members.
For the past four years, the Governance Standing Committee (GSC) took responsibility for director development. As recommended by a governance consultant during CREB®’s past Governance Reviews, it oversaw and determined training opportunities that could address knowledge and experience gaps on the board of directors.
The Leadership Standing Committee (BDLSC) continued to be responsible for guiding potential candidates toward running for the board of directors that could fill these gaps.
1.2.5 Director Development
This policy update returns the responsibility of director development to the Board of Directors.
However, the GSC and the BDLSC still make recommendations on director professional development as they become aware of available learning opportunities or gaps that need to be filled.
CREB® directors are required to complete educational courses or attend conferences required by the Board to enable them to perform at a high level.
CREB® directors travel on a limited and budgeted basis to events that deliver value to CREB® members in four core areas;
• environmental awareness
• relationship management
• issues research
• directors’ skills development
1.2.6 Director Honorarium and Expense
The Board has approved policy changes that clarify that CREB® is not responsible for and does not cover business class air travel expenses or travel expenses for the directors’ spouses or plus ones.
To maintain transparency and keep the membership informed, CREB® commits to include the events that Directors attended in the past year on its annual report. This will also serve as a way to demonstrate the value of participating in the greater real estate community and how that investment benefits the membership.
“The board of directors measures all decisions on how they benefit our one strategic priority – the members,” says CREB® Chair Christian Twomey.
“The board is responsible to select education opportunities that offer improvement in environmental awareness, relationship management, issues research and directors’ skill development.
The elimination of spousal or plus one travel allowances and the policy update, reflecting the board’s current practice of base travel are examples of the board making improvements to follow through with their commitment to members.”
