2024 government advocacy update

By CREB®
As the year draws to a close, CREB®'s Government Relations Standing Committee (GRSC) is proud to reflect on a year of impactful advocacy and meaningful engagement with all levels of government.

In 2024, CREB®'s advocacy efforts, bolstered by our consulting partner Canadian Strategy Group (CSG), focused on positioning REALTORS® as trusted experts and CREB® as the go-to resource for housing-related insights and policy advice.

Municipal advocacy: Building trust and influence

At the municipal level, CREB® made significant strides in advocating for Calgary's REALTORS® and their clients. Early in the year, CREB® took a firm, data-driven stance against blanket rezoning proposals during City Council's public hearing. The presentation delivered by CREB® was praised for its clarity and professionalism, reinforcing CREB®'s reputation as a credible voice on housing policy.

Building on this, we prioritized relationship-building with city administration and councillors, focusing on fostering dialogue and trust. Key initiatives included:

  • Ward-specific YYC Real Estate reports: Distributed quarterly to each councillor and the mayor, these reports kept housing issues at the forefront and showcased REALTORS®' deep understanding of the market. Distribution was followed up with phone calls to establish and reinforce relationships, for a total of up to 30 touch points with civic leaders each quarter.
  • Strategic engagements: Through one-on-one meetings, CREB® re-established connections with councillors and their staff, including senior aides to Councillors McLean, Wyness, Mian, Dhaliwal, and Wong. These meetings emphasized CREB®'s value as a reliable resource for housing data and policy insight.
  • Collaboration with city administration: CREB® engaged in a productive meeting with Debra Hamilton, General Manager of Planning & Development Services, and her team. Topics ranged from blanket rezoning and land area plans to affordable housing strategies, emphasizing shared goals for a balanced housing market.

This year’s efforts have already shown results, with councillor staff regularly seeking CREB®'s input on housing issues such as short-term rentals and market trends.

Provincial and federal advocacy: Extending our influence

While municipal advocacy remained a priority, CREB® also maintained a strong presence in provincial and federal dialogues. Highlights included:

  • Provincial policy insight: CSG provided valuable intelligence on legislative and regulatory developments affecting Calgary's housing landscape. This included support for meetings with the Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction.
  • Representation at key events: GRSC members participated in CREA’s PAC Days and AREA’s Government Liaison Days, amplifying Calgary REALTORS®' voices at both provincial and national levels.

Advocacy as a member-centric service

Advocacy is a cornerstone of CREB®'s commitment to its 8,400+ members. Through strategic outreach and collaboration, the GRSC has reinforced REALTORS®’ importance in shaping housing policy and creating positive change.

As we move into 2025, CREB®'s advocacy will adapt to the evolving political landscape, particularly with the upcoming municipal election in October, and continue to strengthen our relationships with key stakeholders to ensure REALTORS® remain central to Calgary's housing conversations.
