CREB® advocacy update

By CREB®
One of CREB®’s values is Advocating: “Proactively protecting and enhancing the interests of our members.” To keep you up to date with our advocacy efforts, we periodically report on our activities, news on issues in which CREB® has been active, and the reach of our media relations.

City of Calgary Outreach

A key part of our advocacy efforts is building relationships with City of Calgary councillors, their staff, and high-level City administration. The objective is to be seen as a trusted source of real estate market data and insights to whom these stakeholders will turn when they have questions.

We do this through the distribution of quarterly, ward-specific YYC Real Estate reports to councillors, direct outreach, and our broader media relations efforts.

After we send the YYC Real Estate reports, we follow up to make sure they were received, alone creating over 30 touchpoints each quarter that have translated into ongoing discussions with a number of senior staff in councillor offices.

Upcoming City of Calgary Election

With City of Calgary elections coming up in October, the Government Relations Standing Committee (GRSC) is in the early stages of planning CREB®’s strategy to position CREB® as the trusted source of real estate market data with candidates and to amplify our members’ voices on key issues. Stay tuned for more details.

Municipal Legislation

On Feb. 5, City of Calgary councillors defeated a motion to align recently completed local area plans (LAP) for Westbrook, Heritage and North Hill with the blanket rezoning approved in May of 2024.

This rejection of applying the rezoning to LAPs was based on extensive community consultation and aligned with CREB®’s advocacy efforts opposing the blanket rezoning. This advocacy included a widely-lauded address by CREB® Chief Economist Ann-Marie Laurie at the public hearings held at City Hall last May.

Media Relations

CREB®’s media relations activities keep the REALTOR® brand and CREB® top of mind and establish us as the go-to experts for information about the Calgary and region real estate market.

On Jan. 21, CREB® released the 2025 CREB® Forecast report after Chief Economist Ann-Marie Laurie discussed what to expect in the real estate market in the coming year at the CREB® Forecast Conference and Tradeshow.

In the week following the report’s release, CREB® received the following media coverage:

  • 21 online or print articles.
  • 59 TV and radio stories/mentions.
  • A total reach of online, print and TV coverage of 21,043,349 views.

CREB®'s advocacy work is a collaborative effort shaped by the input and expertise of our members. Thank you for your ongoing support in making a difference for Calgary's housing industry.
