In December of 1995, the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month in Canada, following a motion introduced by the Honourable Jean Augustine, the first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament.
This month, we celebrate and acknowledge the contributions of Black Canadians in our history, culture, and everyday life.
The 2025 theme for Black History Month is: “Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations.” This theme acknowledges the diversity of Black Canadians, the importance of Black leadership and the legacy being built for future generations.
Many organizations and educational resources across the country are devoted to the promotion and awareness of the history of Black communities in Canada.
