ICYMI: Rewatch information session on proposed legal defence program special assessment and initiation fee increase

By CREB®
On Thursday, February 27, the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) held a virtual information session where they shared details of two motions to be brought forward at its 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
These two motions include:

1. Legal Defence Program Special Assessment: Established in 2006 as insurance for legal issues, CREA’s Legal Defence Program currently has a $2 million balance, with legal costs surging from $626,000 in 2023 to over $4 million in 2024—a nearly 540% increase. To support more than 160,000 REALTORS®, CREA will propose a $75 special assessment to increase the program balance to approximately $10 million.

2. New Member Initiation Fee: CREA is proposing to raise the new member initiation fee from $200 to $500 for new and returning members who haven’t been active with CREA in the last 24 months. This fee has not changed since 2006, and the proposed increase aligns with the enhanced services provided. The funds will replenish CREA’s Contingency Reserve Fund, effective June 2025 if approved.
